A wonderful collection of Benjamin Simms Herring, assistant engineer of the Confederate steamship Virginia (Merrimac). The collection has seven items and a copy photograph of the Merrimac's six engineers in 1862 and 1889. In the collection is Herring's camp badge from the Thomas B. Lamar Camp, No. 161 - Tallahassee, Florida, a beautiful United Confederate Veterans lapel badge, an 1912 UCV Macon, GA national badge, an 1914 "I Paid My Dollwr" enameled stick pin from Jacksonville, Florida, a badge from the 1907 Jamestown Exposition made from metal from the Merrimac, a watch fob made from an 1794 Spanish silver coin, and one of Herring's buttons from his United States Navy uniform made into a pin. Also included is the copy photo of the six engineers on the Merrimac in 1862 and 1889.
Benjamin Simms Herring was born in Duplin County, North Carolina in 1837. He attended the University of Mississippi and then entered the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. Upon graduation he entered the engineering branch of the navy. At the beginning of the Civil War he was serving aboard the man-of-war Richmond in the Mediterranean, but the vessel was ordered home at once. Upon reaching New York, it was clear to Herring that there was but one course for him. Going south as soon as possible, he entered the Confederate navy and was assigned as assistant engineer to the Confederate steamship Virginia (Merrimac). Herring was given honorable mention in Admiral Buchanan's report of the battle between the Virginia and the U.S.S. Monitor in Hampton Roads, Virginia, March 8 & 9, 1862. After his service on the Virginia he was assigned to duty at Columbus, Georgia and later assigned to the CSS Tennessee of the Mobile squadron. He was paroled on May 10, 1865. He moved to Tallahassee, Florida after the war and was active in the Confederate veteran camp there. He died at his home in Tallahassee, Florida on September 7, 1915.
I won't go into specific discussion on all the items but look at the photos and call if you have any specific questions. Not many Merrimac groupings come on the market!!!
