General Thomas and his Staff on Lookout Mountain CDV

A wonderful image of General George Thomas and his staff standing on Lookout Mountain.† There are six Union generals in this photograph!† The people in this image are from left to right, General John Haskel King, General George Thomas, General Zealous Bates Tower, General James Lowry Donaldson, General John Milton Brannon, D.R. Cooper, Engineer Merrill, General William Dennison Whipple, Lt. Kelly, and Lt. Kello.† Just try to find an outdoor Civil War image with this many generals!!!!† All standing on Lookout Mountain overlooking the Tennessee River.† Do I need to write anymore?!

Union Guards on Picket Duty Coosaw River, South Carolina Images

A great period image of Union soldiers on picket duty along the Coosaw River in South Carolina.† The Coosaw River is south of Charleston around Beaufort, South Carolina.† This original CIvil War period photograph has three Union guards at the rivers edge.† While you can't clearly see the men's faces, it is most likely that these are United States Colored Troops.† Two of the soldiers are armed with rifles.† The image has been matted in a brown matting.† The image is approximately 2 1/2 inches by 2 7/8 inches.† The matting measures approximately 6 7/8 inches by 6 1/2 inches.† A card is attaced to the back of the mat which says "Civil War: Albumen photo...Union Guards on picket duty...at Port Royal Ferry on the Coosaw River, South Carolina...scene of a "sharp" engagement on Jan. 1, 1862...photo taken in 1864.".

80th Illinois Infantry KIA Identified Albumen

A great albumen of William R. West, 80th Illinois Infantry.† West was wounded November 25, 1863 at the battle of Missionary Ridge in the Chattanooga Campaign.† He died on December 2, 1863 from his wounds.† This large format photograph has West seated with his arm resting on a table.† He is wearing a frock coat and Union vest.† A large bushy beard is located on West's face.† The image is approximately 8 inches by 6 3/4 inches.† The card is approximately 8 7/8 inches by 6 3/4 inches.† Written on the back of the image in pencil is "William Robinson West" and "80th Ills.".† The 80th Illinois Infantry fought at Perryville, KY.† They were mounted in April, 1863 and at Blount's Farm on May 2, 1863, promptly captured by General Forrest.† After their exchange the unit participated in the Chattanooga campaign.† William West didn't make it any further.

Brigadier General Benjamin G. Humphreys CDV

As the Colonel of the 21st Mississippi Infantry, Humphrieys led his regiment in most of the early battles the Army of Northern Virginia participated in.† At Gettysburg, he found himself leading Barksdale brigade after Barksdale was killed.†† He was promoted to Brigadier General on August 12, 1863.† His brigade fought under General Longstreet in Georgia and Tennessee and was under General Early in the Shenandoah Valley campaign in 1864.† He was wounded at Berryville in Sept. 1864.† Humphreys was the first elected Governor of Mississippi after the war.† He was inaugurated on October 16, 1865, after receiving a pardon from President Andrew Johnson.† He was ejected from office in 1868 after the President's reconstruction plan collapsedunder fire from the Radicals in Congress.†
General Humphreys is in civilian attire.† There is no†backmark on the image†but "Jno. J. Hood - Meridian Miss" is written in period ink on the back of the image.† John J. Hood was the owner of the photographic album this image came out of.† John J. Hood was a Major in the 13th Mississippi Infantry.

22 Kentucky Infantry - Captain James W. Scott CDV

A nice CDV of Captain James W. Scott of the 22 Kentucky Infantry.† Scott mustered in October 1861 as a Captain.† The image is a nice bust view.† "Jno. W. Scott Capt." is signed in period ink under the photograph of Scott.† The backmark is "W.W. Hoyt's New York Gallery, Louisville, KY".

58th North Carolina Partisan Rangers Infantry Ided CDV

A very nice CDV of Major George Washington Finley Harper.† George Washington Finley Harper of Caldwell County enlisted at the age of twenty-seven in May 1862. In 1863 he was promoted to captain of Company H, Fifty-eighth Regiment North Carolina Troops, Army of Tennessee. He participated in all the major battles in the west until wounded at Resaca, Georgia, in May 1864. After returning to duty, he fought at Bentonville on March 19-21, 1865.† Harper was the regimental historian.† athe image is a bust shot with a majors star on his collar.† Written on the back of the CDV is "G.W.F. Harper - 58th N.C. Regt".† The backmark is "R.A. Lewis, 160 Chatham Street, New York".† Harper went on to have signifigant political career in North Carolina and was mayor of Lenoir, North Carolina for a time.† A very clean CDV.

A great photograph of General James McPhereson with a killer backmark.† The backmark is "Morse's Photographic Gallery, Huntsville, ALA. - Branch of the Gallery of the Cumberland, 25 Cedar Street, Opposite Commercial Hotel, Nashville, Tenn.".† THe image is clear and nice and General McPhereson is wearing 2 stars on his shoulder boards.† A great image of a killed in action general.

Grigsby House - Gen. Johnson's HQ Centreville, VA CDV

A great Matthew Brady image of the Grigsby House located in Centreville, Virginia.† This was General Joseph Johnson's headquarters previous to the evacuation of Manassas Junction.† There are quite a few people in this photo.† Two black boys stand by the man in the center and a black woman stands to the right side of the house.† It is very likely these people are slaves.† The photo was taken on 1862.† This image was sold by J.W. Queen & Co., Philadelphia as noted on the back of the card.

Lt. Sidney H. Bridgers, 47th North Carolina Infantry CDV

A nice CDV of Lt. Sidney H. Bridgers, Co. A, 47th North Carolina Infantry.† Bridgers died in Richmond, VA on November 15, 1863 from wounds taken at Bristoe Station, VA on October 14, 1863.† The backmark is "Photographed by E.F. Small, Wilson, N.C.".† A great Confederate image with a great Southern backmark!†† Please note - Lt. Bridgers was killed in the war.† This is a CDV copy of an ambrotype that was made of him before he died.† The photographer on the back of the CDV made the photograph after the war.† Small was a Confederate soldier.† Obviously he did not make this CDV until after the war.† If you would like to discus the photgraph with me please call.† I thought all this was obvious but I have found out it is not.†
