A nice image of Lt. Thomas E. Cutter of Company B, 35th Massachusetts Infantry.  He mustered in on August 6, 1862 as a corporal.  He was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant, Quartermaster, and 1st Lieutenant during his military career.  He mustered out in  June 1865.  The backmark is "Batchelder, Photographic Artist, Essex Hall Building, 39 State Street, Newburyport,Mass.".

The 35th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment lost 10 officers and 138 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 officer and 100 enlisted men to disease during the Civil War. It is honored by a monument at Burnside's Bridge at Antietam.
