A nice image of Captain Syria M. Budlong.  Budlong mustered into Company G, 45th Illinois Infantry in November 1861 as a 1st Sergeant.  He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in December 1861 and to 1st Lieutenant in June 1862.  He was promoted to Captain in June 1863 and to Captain and Assistant Adjutant General in October 1864.  In March 1865 he was promoted by brevet to Major.  He mustered out in July 1865.  Written uder his image in period ink is "Yours, S M Budlong - Captain & AA Inspt Genl - 3rd Div - 15 A.c. D I.".  The backmark is "Morse's Gallery of the Cumberland, No. 25 Cedar St., Opposite the Commercial Hotel, Nashville, Tenn.".
