An absolutely wonderful Grand Army of the Republic cannon ballot box from the Department of Michigan Corbin Post #88. This ballot box is made in the shape of a cannon. The members would take a white or black marble and roll it down the inside of the cannon barrel. The marble rolls into a box and a bell sounds. The bell was one of the ways they had of preventing voter fraud!!! (Maybe we need to pay attention to the old ways.) The box opens and several marbles are currently in the box. If a black marble was in the drawer, it could mean someone was not happy with the vote and it was turned down. Our term "black balled" came from devices like this.

The Corbin Post was located in Union City, Michigan. The post name is stencilled on the bottom of the box. Also with the ballot box is a list of members from the Corbin Post. The cannon looks to be hand made and is approximately 12 inches long, 5 1/8 inches wide, and 5 1/4 inches tall at it's high point. This is a fantastic opportunity to own something that hardly ever comes on the market anymore. Don't miss this great piece!!
