A great CDV of Major Frank M. Spencer, C.S.A. Spencer was raised in Maryland and Washington, D.C. At 15 he worked in his uncle Samuel Bacon's grocery store in Washington City for one year as a clerk. For several years after that he worked as a clerk in a land office in Washington for several years. in 1860, he was admitted to the bar in Washington, D.C.

In 1861, he traveled to Texas and joined the Confederate States army as a private with Crums Texas Battalion that became part of the 15th Texas Calvary. He was promoted to Major in 1862 and served as paert of the Staff Officers Corp, Division & Brigade Staff under Brigadier General M.D. Ector's "Texas Brigade" until 1865. Major battles Spencer participated in were Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Atlanta, Richmond, Kentucky, Hood's winter operations in Tennessee, and the last battles in North Carolina.

Written on the front of the CDV is "Maj. Spencer, C.S.A.". The photograph was taken by Fredricks & Co., New York. Written in period ink on the back of the carte is "Very Respectfully Yr.Obt. Svt. - Frank M. Spencer, Galveston, Texas". A three cent green stamp is on the back of the carte dating this CDV to no later than 1866.
