The 1897 badge is a very ornate, three-dimensional badge. The top bar is a gold-colored pinback inscribed "Delegate", with red and white enamelling. Suspended from this is the center drop, which is gilt with a three dimensional brown buffalo head. Above the buffalo is "31st NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT" and below is "Buffalo, NY 1897" in gold letters on a white enamelled field. The buffalo head is flanked by United States flags (two on each side), enamelled in full color with gold stars. From the center drop is suspended a gilt pendant in the shape of a GAR star, with intertwined "GAR" enamelled in red, white, and blue. The arms of the star show the branches of the service. A dark blue ribbon backs the badge. This badge was made by G.G. Braxmar, of New York City.
