A neat oath of allegiance signed by Sampson Ball in Iredell County, North Carolina. After the war was over, all Confederates were required to sign an oath of allegiance to the United States. This one reads "I, Sampson Ball, of Iredell County, State of North Carolina, do solemnly swear or affirm, in presence of Almighty God, that I will henceforth faithfully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of the States thereunder; and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the emancipation of slaves. So help me God. (signed) Sampson Ball - Sworn and subscribed to this the 16th day of Sept, A.D., 1865, before J.M. Lurmer, J.P. - It is hereby certified that the above is a true copy of the original oath taken and subscribed by Sampson Ball. (signature of three J.P.s)."
