A wonderful hand carved, framed photo holder which has Civil War and 1891 photographs of J.J. Sitton and family. Sitton enlisted as a private in the 24th Missouri Infantry. The frame is approximately 11 inches by 13 inches. A wooden piece is inside the frame that holds the photographs of Sitton and his family. The wooden piece is hand carved! On the wooden piece is carved a Civil War musket with a bayonet. "1861 - 1865 - Co. H - 24th Mo. Inf. Vols" with a Sixteenth Corp emblem are centered between the two photographs. A CDV of Sitton is behind glass and has "1862" underneath the image. A tintype of his wife is in an oval with "1868" under her image. A photograph of his family is toward the bottom of the carving with "1891" over the photograph. A cross is to the left of the family photograph. Under the family photograph is "J.J. Sitton & Family". On the back of the carving is writing in pencil saying J.J. Lyons carved this for his old comrade between July 14, 1894 and July 20, 1894. Here is what is written on the back -"This frame began July 14, 1894 (30th anniversary of the battle of Tupelo, Miss) July 20, 1894. Made for a soldier comrade of my old co. of the 24 MO and for his wife's birthday. J.J. Lyon".

James J. Lyon enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant in Company H, 24th Missouri Infantry in December, 1861. In 1864 he transferred to the 21st Missouri Infantry. He was promoted to Captain, Major, and finally Lt. Colonel. The 24th Missouri was a hard fighting Western regiment. A great research project with two interesting avenues of research!
