General Ferrero started his Civil War career as Colonel of the 51st New York Infantry. At Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg, he was in charge of a brigade of the IX Corps and was promoted to brigadier general on September 10, 1862. He fought at Vicksburg and Knoxville and was moved to the Eastern theatre. He was given a command of a newly organized colored division of the corps. At the celebrated battle of the Crater, his men were leaderless while Ferrero and General Ledlie were drinking in the rear. He did receive a brevet to Major General in December for "Meritorrious service in the present campaign before Petersburg and Richmond". He spent the last few months of the war stationed in the defenses of Bermuda Hundred.
The image is a nice three quarter shot with Ferrero holding his hat. The backmark is E. & H.T. Anthony from a Photographic Negative by BRADY.
